Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

After five months, the coronavirus is still with us. Many states are starting to see declining numbers and, hopefully, we will see the same soon. The Governor’s extension of phase 2 is in place until September 11 at 5:00 p.m. I hope you have been able to enjoy the summer as it comes to an end with the Labor Day weekend.

Labor Day is a great American holiday which originated in the early 1800’s. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law June 28, 1894. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. All our members have participated in these contributions and achievements!

The Social Committee always planned some extraordinary events for us, and I look forward to the return of these activities. I have missed the social gatherings this year and know you have too. Maybe the next phase will allow us more options.

With the end of summer, we need to prepare for the peak of the hurricane season which is typically September and October.  It is not too early to get prepared, as there may be more shortages of supplies than usual. The POA will continue to keep you updated about storms in our area.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend!

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson

POOL

As this summer begins to drift away and the season of fall begins during this strange and unprecedented year, we have been extremely fortunate to be able to still enjoy and relax at the pool. It is unfortunate we were not able to allow family members and guests to join us this summer, but we look forward to next year and can only hope we are back to normal.

After Labor Day next month, the hours of the pool will be adjusted as temperatures and the length of days both change. This has always been and will again be determined depending on the weather or storms.

The hours will change to the following:

doors will unlock at 9:00 a.m.

lap swimming will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. daily

water aerobics will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday thru Saturday

open swim will be daily from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at which time doors will be locked down.

We hope that the weather cooperates with us and we can enjoy the pool a little longer.

At present and since the pool opened this year, the rules that have been implemented during this time will remain in effect until we have completely moved from phase 2, at which time we will notify membership of any rule changes.

PHASE 2 – CSPOA POOL RULES

The North Carolina Department of Health (DoH) Guidelines restrict the number of members allowed into the pool deck area. We will be admitting 60 member/residents only, and members in the pool to 35 swimmers. We will be allowing 60 members in at a time to max out safely.

Entrance to the pool will be on a “FIRST COME” basis, and swimmers/sunbathers will not be permitted in once occupancy max has been reached. Once this happens it will be posted outside the gate that the pool is full, so please DO NOT ENTER. When people leave and the max lessens and the area cleaned, the sign will change.

With the low numbers allowed to attend, admittance will be kept to MEMBER/RESIDENT ONLY. NO GUESTS (including out of town family) will be allowed at this time under Phase 2. You may be asked to show residence by id if needed.

When entering the pool area, after signing in, you must choose between a table or a lounge chair. USING BOTH IS PROHIBITED with seating capacity. Due to restrictions we are only able to keep a certain amount of furniture available as each piece must be wiped down before reuse.

Tables with 4 chairs are available for families in need of more than 2 chairs. Tables with 2 chairs are to accommodate singles and pairs. Lounge chairs will be available for sun bathers. We ask that if you’re there to sunbath, please do not use a table.

NO reserving seats will be permitted. Only complete parties will be admitted to the pool, as admission is on a first come basis.

All furniture must remain in place. MOVING of furniture is prohibited as it is placed and marked within the social distancing requirements.

During Phase 2, guidelines require families move as ONE UNIT. They MUST remain together at all times in or out of the pool. Children are to stay within the family unit.

No balls or toys are permitted during Phase 2. Only noodles are permitted and MUST remain with you at all times.

Kiddie pool is to be used by parents with non-swimming toddlers, and the child MUST be in an approved swim diaper.  NO REGULAR DIAPERS ARE ALLOWED. Children are not allowed without a parent in the kiddie pool area.

Stairs and ladders are marked per requirement. Please, keep both areas open so swimmers may enter and exit safely. One set of stairs is for entering, and one set for exiting.  Both ladders are used as an EXIT ONLY.

Using bathrooms will be at your own risk. They will be disinfected daily per requirements. Due to the second gate being used, please keep your key card/fob with you as it will be required for reentry into the pool area.

Rules are to be followed by all members. Failure to do so will result in suspension of privileges to the pool.

Please note that these rules are continuously in draft mode as regulations may change per DoH guidelines. Rules not followed may result in the loss of our pool permit by the DoH.

TENNIS/PICKLEBALL

The weather will begin cooling down and we will begin seeing more tennis players along with pickleball players taking to the courts to enjoy some well needed physical activity. The wind screens have been rolled up during this hurricane season as they were last year, and we ask that they are not lowered until the season is over and storms are no longer expected.

As always, please while playing, stay hydrated, and throw all garbage in the lined trash container inside the courts.

BOCCI BALL

Bocci has become an active sport again at the CSPOA recreation area. We are happy everyone there has been able to enjoy playing and hope to see more people join in.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

The time is now to submit your application for a political sign. Please review the Guidelines and if you have any questions, contact me at the POA office at 579-2044.

Guidelines for Political signs:  Please submit your request for a political sign at least five (5) busines days prior to displaying the sign -by September 7, 2020- to the allowable date of display of September 12, 2020. As the guidelines state, it must be removed no later than November 10, 2020. Please read the information below. Flags and/or banners with a political reference are allowed. They must not exceed 15 square feet in size. For a flag that is 3 ft. by 5 ft., banners the same maximum footage required.

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 3, Sub-section 121 (2) a. of the North Carolina Planned Community Act Chapter 47F, and in concurrence with Section 6, Sub-section 18 of the Declaration of Restrictions of the Carolina Shores Property Owners' Association, Inc. (CSPOA), the CSPOA will allow political signs to be displayed no earlier than forty-five (45) days before the day of an election and no later than seven (7) days after an election day. Signs shall be no larger than 24 inches by 24 inches, and on a freestanding support. No signs are allowed on any unimproved lot. A political sign is one that attempts to influence the outcome of an election, including supporting or opposing an issue on the election ballot.”

I remind all members that anything being done to the exterior of the home requires prior ACC approval. That includes painting shutters, doors, trim, and siding the same color. Also, roof shingles with the same color requires ACC approval. There have been incidents of emergency repairs to roofs due to storm damage causing leaks. If this occurs, you can address it without required approval. An emergency is one that is addressed immediately. If the repair requires a complete replacement of the roof shingles, you must submit the proper request form. It takes clear weather and time to acquire the necessary materials, so please submit the ACC Alteration/Addition Request before starting the work.

As always, if you are unsure or have any questions, please reach out to me at the office number and leave a message. Please do not call my home. You can also e-mail me directly at: acc@carolinashores.net. Remember we are on a fluid schedule so give me time to respond. Stay safe.

Garden Club Mary Conover

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the installation of our new officers took place July 21 at the Pavilion. Voting had taken place through emails to the members.

The Board met again August 13 to discuss the upcoming year. September 9 will be here before you know it, although looking a bit different this year! We have decided to hold two (2) meetings at the Pavilion (1:00-2:00 and 2:30-3:30) to adhere to the guidelines of small groups while in Phase 2. An email will go out to members requesting RSVP with details. Lunch will not be provided by Causeway Gourmet as previously announced, and instead individual packets of snacks and bottled water will be provided by the Garden Club Board.

For now, the Board will meet monthly to assess the pandemic situation and plan the following month's meeting and activity. We will let you know about our infamous Soup & Bake Sale and Holiday Luncheon as those decisions are made.

The Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of the month, September to May. Dues are $10/year. The Pavilion is located at the Carolina Shores Recreation Area, next to the Pool. Please contact Joanne Bendy at (910) 575-0071 for time to attend if new to membership. Stay safe and healthy!

MCj04398570000[1]Hello to all our regular members and any single in the community who is interested in joining our group when the POA clubhouse reopens. When we get the word that has happened, I will notify the group members and the individuals who contacted me last winter about joining us just as the pandemic hit here. Hopefully, that will happen sometime this fall.

In the meantime, let us all stay safe and well by applying the guidelines that have been established for our area.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white background

On Friday, August 21, our group met to discuss the nonfiction book Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City by Greg Grandin. Fordlandia, developed in the Amazon jungle beginning in 1928, was a failed attempt by Ford to establish an American-type colony in South America where his workers would live and produce the rubber needed for his automobiles. While the story of this mostly forgotten experiment is very interesting, and the book provided a great deal of insight into Henry Ford’s life and character, most of our members felt that it could have been told in a much shorter and less detailed manner. One person thought it was “too wordy” and another said that it might be more suitable as a textbook in a study of Henry Ford’s life.

On Friday, September 18, we will meet for what we consider to be our most important meeting of the year. Not only will we be discussing The Long Haul: A Trucker’s Tales of Life on the Road by Finn Murphy, but we will also be compiling our reading list for the upcoming year and following that with a brown bag lunch. Our meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will be held under the pavilion in the park by the swimming pool. All members are asked to be prepared to submit the title of one book that they would like to have included on our new reading list. It is suggested that recommended books have been published within the last ten years, be easily available, and have been pre-read by the person choosing the book. Due to COVID-19 precautions, each member is asked to bring a brown bag lunch (and something to drink) in lieu of our usual potluck meal.

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
